June 4, 2007: Sassafras River; N39-22.316, W076-03.741. For the first half of the 20th Century Betterton, Maryland, was one of Chesapeake's favorite beach resorts with droves of vacationers coming by ferryboat to guest houses, arcades, dance halls, and beer gardens . . . now all gone leaving a lovely clean town set up on a hill with no stores.
The neighborhood was enhanced by the presence of this three masted schooner which we passed on the way to the Betterton public dock which provided no water or electric power. The very pretty beach did have a 700' boardwalk.
June 5, 2007: After we enjoyed a morning walk through the small town and while we had breakfast an eagle swooped down and caught his breakfast . . . then took it to the beach-front to enjoy his harvest. (You will have to enlarge the picture to see the eagle, double-click the picture.) We then motored up to Georgetown, Maryland, and went on to the Bohemia River.
On the way to the C&D (Chesapeake and Delaware) canal we passed a tug pushing a gravel barge south. The Captain commented on how he liked SONATA's appearance and wished us well on our journey.
June 6, 2007: The C&D canal opened in 1829 and was 66' wide, 10' deep. Now it is 450' wide and a minimum of 35' deep. It is cut to ocean level and no longer has any locks. Traffic in the canal is controlled at each end, Old Town Point Wharf, Maryland; and, Reedy Point, Delaware. Traffic is stopped if there is a problem in the canal.
We had intended to stop at Chesapeake City, Maryland, but found ourselves there by 10:00 a.m. and, we were making as much as 10.5 knots . . . pretty good for a 8.5 knot boat. We decided to press on a little further and complete the canal which we found we had to ourselves. There was no boat or ship/barge traffic. These two bridges are the major highway routes over the canal.
We departed the C&D canal into Delaware Bay, the Delaware River, and to the East was this nuclear power plant. We turned to our left and went upstream to Delaware City for our overnight.
Delaware City is a little forgotten place along the old, former, C&D Canal. Our dock at the Marina here is in the old canal. A comparison can be made of the old and the new from the pictures that have been included in this group. There are three places to eat and I will have cold pizza for breakfast . . . thank you very much. We will be off to Cape May in the a.m.

We have a 36' Carver Aft Cabin. Maybe we will cross paths along the way? We are still struggling with blog photos - have only been able to download photos on website so far. Loved reading your blog. Have a safe trip! Jeff and Melinda Borck
